Worthing Winter Warmer 2016

Monday, March 7th, 2016

I have had a busy weekend on the bike.  On Saturday 13th Feb I did the Worthing Winter Warmer a 104km Audax organised by the club.

The weather was cold and very wet. Despite this 81 people started the event and 72 finished. I started the ride with Rome as I had programmed the route into my Garmin we were soon joined by some other members of the club. At the first checkpoint on the top of Alderbrook near Cranleigh it was snowing and with freezing hands and feet we gratefully topped up on supplies and hot drinks.  The decent was very hairy with the back wheel slipping occasionally on heavy breaking particularly at the point when a car did an emergency stop. Through the rest of the ride it slowly warmed up although often I was unable to feel my feet. We  were grateful to finish within a reasonable time.  Cakes soup and hot drinks were provided allowing us to defrost hands and feet.

Unfortunately whilst loading the car I dropped my Garmin in the car park.  Someone found it and thanks to a little trick I learned on powering up the device my name and number were on the start up screen.

Sundays ride was a different type of test.  The weather was dryer although not any warmer.  and my legs felt empty on the climbs.

My ride details can be found on Strava

Weight

Friday, January 29th, 2016

The most important thing I can do before the trip excluding training is to loose weight.
I started this year at 118.5kg which gave me a BMI of 33.3. I have reduced this to 111.8kg by using mynetdiary to calorie count. This ties in with my fitbit app allowing me to eat the required food to loose weight in a controlled manner. The app helps reduce my temptation to snack which historically been by biggest downfall.
Sophie is fantastic, menu planning to give a well rounded diet of fantastic food for lunch and dinner but keeping the calories in check.

Hopefully I will get to about 100kg by the time of the ride which will save me huge amounts of effort on the climbs.

Looking at watts/kg at 20min peak power
At start of year it was: 1.96
On 24th Jan : 2.11
If I get to 100kg with same power it would be: 2.44
This would give me a 20% increase in performance on hills.
Obviously with my training I hope to increase the raw power output as well.

Last day of preparation

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

GrottoI think I am as ready as I will every be. The slight niggle in my right lower leg is still there but not impacting my cycling or getting worse, my bags are packed and I have done all the training I planned to do.

Now all I need to do is hop on the bike on Tuesday lunchtime and start pedalling. I have raised over £1300 so far and thanks to those of you who are collecting on my behalf.

I was watching the Tour de France this afternoon on TV as they cycled passed Lourdes, it made me think that in 9 days I will be arriving in Lourdes, god willing. I just hope and pray that my legs will be strong enough to do it.  I know that I have given my best in preparing for this pilgrimage and am the fittest I have ever been.

The cycling this weekend has been good because yesterday I did two hours in the heavy rain which was surprisingly fun. Today I just went up and down the Beacon 3 times, I did not feel as strong as usual but I am not too worried about that.  I just need to eat a bit more tonight and tomorrow.

I am looking forward to being able to ride with a clear head, not worrying about every little thing and just getting in a zone of spinning the pedals and enjoying the scenery. I hope to take lots of photos and keep you updated with my progress. (more…)

3 days 4 hours to go before the start

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

I am really delighted today as the sponsorship I have received has risen to over £1200, with much more pledged.  In fact I have had so many donations my paypal account has contacted me to confirm my details to prevent money laundering! Don’t worry I am not, and I have sorted out the paypal account so there is no problem. (more…)

Training in June

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Well the training in June has gone well. I did the ride to the Marsden and Back, the London to Brighton with Soph and lots of training in between. Below are some of my stats. (more…)

Heat

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I only have two weeks to go until I set off and am now getting a bit apprehensive about the trip.  My main worry is the heat and how much this will affect my cycling.  As long as I am moving fast enough you get a nice breeze but staying hydrated is going to be the main key.

Soph is on call tonight so I will go for a long ride when I get home.  The bike is getting serviced just to make sure its ready too.

Chris has done a great job of phoning around getting sponsorship on Sunday and I will be doing some calling in the next few days so be prepared.

I am in a bit of a dilema about training, I feel as if I need to do some more long back to back rides but also know that I should taper down the amount of riding I do before I set off. Any ideas would be helpful.

Back on the Bike

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Well after a few days being stuck at work and then having a meeting last night it was good to get back on the bike. My replacement road id had arrived after I accidentally through my other one out. It was warm today which is good as I am sure in France it will be much hotter and I did a 1 hour ride. My thighs felt a little tight but otherwise I am doing good. Sponsorship is continuing to come in which is good news but more would be wonderful! I am on call again tomorrow but will bring the bike so I can do some riding in the evening. On the weekend I will be doing some more riding. Next week I plan on riding to work every day. Its not long to go and I am getting quite excited.

Frustration

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Training this week is not going to go well.  I’m call yesterday, today and Friday. Tomorrow I have a meeting in the evening and on Thursday, my half day, I have a clinic appointment at 1:30.  So my training opportunities’ are Thursday pm, I will ride to work on Friday and then ride to my parents Saturday and then onto Storrington on Sunday.  Its just not enough though. I am feeling frustrated and irritable but am clinging on.  I am sure next week I will be feeling a bit better again. (more…)

What I have been up to this week

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Well as per usual my training plan did not go quite as I intended.  However in many ways it went better, not from the quantity of the training but in the enjoyment I had of it.

First of all a confession last week Soph and I went to the Evans Cycle sale.  This is a massive warehouse sale by one of the largest chain of bike stores in the UK.  Their warehouse is in Gatwick and they put up a massive marquee, anyway I bought some new cycling shoes and a couple of jerseys as my other ones all have holes in from crashing! Soph bought some shoes and clothing too. (more…)

Training plan for this week

Monday, June 8th, 2009

As I don’t have any cycle events planned for this weekend I am aiming to increase my endurance on sequential days.

Tomorrow if the weather is not awful I will be doing some hill intervals up Ditchling Beacon (Hopefully 5). I am on call Wednesday but will bring the Bike and try to do some training work permitting. Thursday and Friday I am planning on doing 3hr on Thursday and 5hr on Friday.  I have not decided what to do over the weekend but will probably do some riding with Soph as we prepare for the London2Brighton the following weekend. You can sponsor her to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
