Why am I going to do this bike ride?
Am I mad?
Is it because I am super fit?
Is it a way of being noticed?
Is it because I need a goal in life?
I am not sure but I don’t think its any of the above. I know this blog in some way a method of preparing myself and stopping me from backing out.
I have a fear of failure and consequently I set very high goals for my self. If I don’t reach that goal I feel that I have failed. I don’t look back and go look how well I have done, I have done all this but just couldn’t manage the last bit. All I see is that I have not completed what I set out to do.
As a result of this, I think, I feel as though I rarely reach my own unrealistic expectations and this leads me to feel depressed.
Sometimes I will not even attempt something if I feel I might fail.
Like many people who suffer from depression I fail to see my achievements; becoming a doctor, marrying an amazing woman, being a reasonable photographer, having wonderful friends.
I want this bike ride to be one of those achievements but if it does not go exactly to plan to know that I have given it my best shot and hopefully will have raised money to help sick pilgrims go to Lourdes in the future.
I know what the Arundel and Brighton pilgrimage has done for me: inner healing, great friendships and a beautiful intelligent wife. I hope to give something extra in return and I am looking forward to the challenge.

On call

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I am on call tonight and tomorrow. I managed to go for a 30 min ride along Worthing seafront. It was sunny but there was a strong headwind on the way to Ferring. On the way back though it was great.
I will probably do the same again tomorrow. I am currently trying to decide which ferry to take? I think my options are newhaven-dieppe, Portsmouth-le Havre or Portsmouth-St Malo.
The advantage of the St Malo start is that it’s further south and so a shorter distance to cycle but in many ways I feel starting in Le Harve is a better choice although I have nothing to judge this on. Any opinions would be helpful.

Current Training plans

I am gradually increasing the amount of time I spend on the bike. Two weeks ago I had a accident when I had a collision with a motor scooter. I am recovering from this but still am in a bit of discomfort.
The next organised event I am doing is the sunday sportive near Petworth on the 10th May which is 133km with a good number of hills. Following this I am doing my first 100 mile ride the following weekend in Kent.

I am a 117kg doctor planning to raise money for the Arundel and Brighton Lourdes pilgrimage by cycling to Lourdes instead of taking the train this summer. I will be cycling about 600 miles in 7 days. I aim to keep this blog upto date with how I am preparing for this challenge, what route I will take and some more information about Lourdes.
