I only have two weeks to go until I set off and am now getting a bit apprehensive about the trip.  My main worry is the heat and how much this will affect my cycling.  As long as I am moving fast enough you get a nice breeze but staying hydrated is going to be the main key.

Soph is on call tonight so I will go for a long ride when I get home.  The bike is getting serviced just to make sure its ready too.

Chris has done a great job of phoning around getting sponsorship on Sunday and I will be doing some calling in the next few days so be prepared.

I am in a bit of a dilema about training, I feel as if I need to do some more long back to back rides but also know that I should taper down the amount of riding I do before I set off. Any ideas would be helpful.

Finished planning the route

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Well last night I finished planning the route which I will publish in the next 2 days. I have sorted out where I will stay and booked the ferry. I am just finalising what equipment and clothing to take.

The riding is going well although for some reason my weight has gone up in the last week, so I will be watching my diet a bit more. Today is the new helpers day in Storrington and I will be doing a short talk on medical maters relating to the pilgrimage.

Back on the Bike

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Well after a few days being stuck at work and then having a meeting last night it was good to get back on the bike. My replacement road id had arrived after I accidentally through my other one out. It was warm today which is good as I am sure in France it will be much hotter and I did a 1 hour ride. My thighs felt a little tight but otherwise I am doing good. Sponsorship is continuing to come in which is good news but more would be wonderful! I am on call again tomorrow but will bring the bike so I can do some riding in the evening. On the weekend I will be doing some more riding. Next week I plan on riding to work every day. Its not long to go and I am getting quite excited.

Training this week is not going to go well.  I’m call yesterday, today and Friday. Tomorrow I have a meeting in the evening and on Thursday, my half day, I have a clinic appointment at 1:30.  So my training opportunities’ are Thursday pm, I will ride to work on Friday and then ride to my parents Saturday and then onto Storrington on Sunday.  Its just not enough though. I am feeling frustrated and irritable but am clinging on.  I am sure next week I will be feeling a bit better again. (more…)

London to Brighton

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Soph at Turners Hill Following the chain breaking incident last night, which shock me up a little, we had an early start getting up at 5:30am. We cycled down the A3 to Clapham Common for the 6:30 start with a brief stop at Evans cycles to pick up a new chain, as I did not trust my bodge. The chain had a “easy link” which is designed to be easy to use however after 10 min of trying to get it to link correctly I asked one of the mechanics to try and fit it, I am glad to say he had more trouble than me.  I eventually managed it and we made it to the start on time. London to Brighton tomorrow

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Well we are ready for the off tomorrow but it would not be a ride without a small amount of drama.
Whilst riding to Andrew and Lauras this evening in London my chain snapped in a slightly dodge bit of Clapham. A swift bit of bodgeing ensued. Anyway I should at least make it to the start.

Provisional route for Day 2

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Here is my provisional route for day 2. As you can see its a bit shorter than day 1. The planning is going ahead nicely as is the sponsorship. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far.  I need to get a move on and book the ferry this week.

On Sunday I am doing the London to Brighton with Soph and things are going well.  She cycled up Ditchling beacon on Tuesday which I am really proud off (more…)

What I have been up to this week

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Well as per usual my training plan did not go quite as I intended.  However in many ways it went better, not from the quantity of the training but in the enjoyment I had of it.

First of all a confession last week Soph and I went to the Evans Cycle sale.  This is a massive warehouse sale by one of the largest chain of bike stores in the UK.  Their warehouse is in Gatwick and they put up a massive marquee, anyway I bought some new cycling shoes and a couple of jerseys as my other ones all have holes in from crashing! Soph bought some shoes and clothing too. (more…)

Provisional Route for Day 1 in France

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I have been busy route planning when I have had time between work and training. My sleep has been poor this week but it seems to be improving. I am designing a sponsor form but not sure what to write, any ideas?

Below is my provisional plan for day 1 in France following getting off the ferry at Ouistreham.

Training plan for this week

Monday, June 8th, 2009

As I don’t have any cycle events planned for this weekend I am aiming to increase my endurance on sequential days.

Tomorrow if the weather is not awful I will be doing some hill intervals up Ditchling Beacon (Hopefully 5). I am on call Wednesday but will bring the Bike and try to do some training work permitting. Thursday and Friday I am planning on doing 3hr on Thursday and 5hr on Friday.  I have not decided what to do over the weekend but will probably do some riding with Soph as we prepare for the London2Brighton the following weekend. You can sponsor her to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
