Finished the Castle ride today

Feeling slightly wet

Well I just about managed to finish the cycle ride today, My first 100 mile ride, and what a ride it was.I met up with Liz at 7am and at the time it was cold but dry, we had a discussion about what to wear. I put on overshoes, arm warmers, leg warmers and a gillet.  I packed my rain coat too.

The start was very well organised and we started in batches.  I felt reasonably strong and the first 5 miles or so were not to bad except for a very strong wind, then the heavens opened and it rained hard for the next 3h. It was cold wet and windy and both Liz and I were feeling miserable.  We managed to carry on though, the roads were full  of debris from the wind and about every 100m there were people dealing with punctures.  Eventually at the bottom of a hill after about 40 miles Liz had a puncture which took a while to fix.

The rest stations were fantastic with a great selection of food and drinks.  At 1230 we arrived at the lunch station at 57 miles.  The food was great with a buffet I needed it as I was starting to flag due to the extra effort battling the wind and rain.

The second half was a bit easier but I had virtually no energy reserves and so just about crawled up even the easy ones.  Liz was great waiting at the top for me but it must of been very frustrating for her.

10 miles before we finished Liz and I decided to part company as she was cold and I was holding her back.  Crossing the finish line after nearly 10h was amazing as the day had been so hard people were clapping us in.

Thanks to Liz for all her support today as it was very difficult conditions and without here I might of pulled out. Thanks too to Action Medical who organised a fantastic ride with support riders, great refreshment and a friendly atmosphere.
